Tony Hall

Well known as one of the UK’s leading big pot throwers Tony has created a unique range of distinctive ceramics from exceptional large-scale outdoor pots suitable for the finest of country houses to straightforward hand thrown tableware such as his distinctive white ware.

Having trained in Britain and France Tony developed his career at Whichford Pottery in Oxfordshire where he was chief thrower before establishing The Pottery at Castle Hill Studios.

While maintaining The Tony Hall Pottery as his core interest, Tony has branched into innovative complimentary areas of work including sculpture and place making by introducing large-scale three-dimensional work into urban and rural locations.

Tony is an experienced workshop leader and course coordinator as well as exceptional ceramic artist. He manages the conservation aspects of the farm.

Lois Hopwood

Trained in Fine Art at Newcastle University and Tapestry Conservation with the Historic Royal Palaces Agency,  set design  at the National Film and Television School Lois has developed a distinctive career in a complimentary set of skills and is an experienced tutor.

Painting and drawing have always been at the heart of her work and she has exhibited regularly throughout the UK in group and one person shows. The breadth and depth of her interests manifest themselves in the innovative ideas she is pursuing especially those related to the natural landscape of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Radnorshire.

Her cross art form interests extend into animation and film work as well as working closely with Tony developing an exceptional range of unique and distinctive commemorative sgrafito decorated pots many of which commemorate special occasions.


Tony and Lois work with a range of artists and organisations to ensure that any course or workshop is run to the highest standards. Their workshop experience includes setting up, running and tutoring courses and workshops in schools, community centres and public events as well as at Castle Hill Studios.
